Yasir seven-for sets up emphatic Pakistan win

Yasir seven-for sets up emphatic Pakistan win

A seven-wicket haul from Yasir Shah completed an emphatic turnaround from Pakistan, who took the Galle Test by 10 wickets after recovering from a precarious position at the start of the fourth morning. Pakistan had been five down and 182 behind Sri Lanka's first-innings total at the time; few could have predicted then that their openers would waltz to a target of 90 at eight runs an over a day and a half later.

The revival, sparked by Sarfraz Ahmed and Asad Shafiq's sixth-wicket partnership and carried forward by Yasir's fizzing legbreaks on the fifth afternoon, also vindicated Misbah-ul-Haq's decision to bowl first. With the first day washed out, Pakistan's best chance of winning lay in batting just once. As it happened, they almost pulled off an innings win; Mohammad Hafeez and Ahmed Shehzad only needed 11.2 overs to polish off the chase.

Mustafizur stars in landmark series win

Mustafizur Rahman was the hero in Mirpur again, (off)cutting through India's batting with a six-wicket haul to add to his five-for on ODI debut, and launching Bangladesh to their first ever bilateral series win against India. Mustafizur's 6 for 43, the second best figures by a Bangladesh bowler in ODIs, skittled India for 200, before Shakib Al Hasan steered the chase with a busy fifty, his second on the trot.

With this six-wicket win, Bangladesh also cemented their place in the 2017 Champions Trophy. An overjoyed Mashrafe Mortaza, who has been a part of each of Bangladesh's five victories against India, toasted his team's "big achievement".

Hafeez reported for suspect action again

Muhammad Hafeez reported for suspect action again

Offspinner Mohammad Hafeez has once again been reported for a suspect action, following the conclusion of the Galle Test, the Pakistan team management has confirmed to ESPNcricinfo. Hafeez bowled 20 overs in the match and contributed two wickets to Pakistan's ten-wicket victory in the first Test.

According to the ICC's regulations for bowlers reported a second time within a period of a year, if Hafeez's action is found to be illegal once again he faces a bowling ban for a period of at least a year, only after which he will be eligible to apply for a reassessment of his action. He must undergo testing within 21 days of the receipt of the official report and will be allowed to bowl until the results are out.

muhammad hafeez

Hafeez had been reported for a suspect action after the Abu Dhabi Test against New Zealand in November last year, and in December his action was found to be illegal following tests at an ICC accredited centre in Loughborough, England. He was found to have an elbow extension up to 31 degrees, far above the permitted limit of 15 degrees.

Dhoni calls for more runs from lower order

Dhoni calls for more runs from lower order

MS Dhoni believes India have a stable top order that could last them through the 2017 Champions Trophy and into the 2019 World Cup, though he did not mention if he considered himself among the batting core that would last the next four years.

"If you look at the top four or five batsmen, it seems that if they are fit and are in decently good form they are the ones who may go into the next World Cup or the Champions Trophy," Dhoni said.

MS Dhoni

Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma have accumulated 1932 runs from 41 innings - the second-best among openers in the last five years, and their average of 48.30 is the highest among the top 10. The last time Virat Kohli failed to amass 1000 runs in a calendar year was in 2010 - when he missed out by five runs. Ajinkya Rahane might need to work on rotation of strike but he remains a sturdy option in the middle order, while Suresh Raina's utility as a limited-overs player is more than handy.

Rain washes out first day in Galle

Pakistan Vs Srilanka Rain washes out first day in Galle!

Rain washed out the opening day of the Test series between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, without a ball bowled or even a coin tossed in Galle. The pitch and outfield remained under covers right through the day, and the umpires officially called off play after an inspection at 1.45pm.

By then, it was clear no play would be possible. Persistent showers had kept both teams in their hotel, and the heavy cloud cover had ensured the groundstaff kept the covers on even during dry intervals.

England challenged to take Australia on

England challenged to take Australia on

Freed up to speak about the Ashes after doing their best to concentrate on a lopsided series against the West Indies, Darren Lehmann and Michael Clarke have offered a simple message to a newly aggressive and creative England team: bring it on.

Two years ago Lehmann was was particularly outspoken in criticising the stodgy ways of Andy Flower and Alastair Cook, referring to England's style as "dour" and "not how I'd like us to play". Those strident words encouraged Australia's players to reclaim the assertive, Australian way, but now that the New South Welshman Trevor Bayliss is set to take over as coach, Lehmann and Clarke expect fireworks.

"They'll probably play a bit like we play I think," Lehmann said following a 2-0 demolition of the West Indies. "That's what they're trying to do, so it's going to be on for young and old. It's going to be entertaining for everyone and it's going to be an exciting series. They're going to be tough over there as we know and if they're going to play that way it's going to be the team that handles that pressure the best.

"From our point of view this is a great lead-in to that tour and now it's about getting prepared for the Ashes. They've got some things they're trying to work on and Trevor Bayliss will have them getting the way they want to play and he has got to do that pretty quickly."

Australia complete 277-run and win Test Series by 202

Australia complete 277-run and win Test Series by 202

Australia completed a 277-run demolition of West Indies inside four days at Sabina Park to win the Frank Worrell Trophy 2-0. West Indies began the day with eight wickets in hand, but their resistance was feeble. The contest was all but over after they lost 5 for 56 in the first session, and they crumbled for 114 shortly after lunch.

West Indies' win-loss ratio at home over the last 10 years, the worst for any top-eight team. West Indies have played 41 home Test during this period, winning 11 and losing 17. 9 Number of times three out of West Indies' top six batsmen have been dismissed for ducks in a Test innings. Five of those instances have come since 2000. 31 Runs scored by West Indies' top six batsmen in the second innings, the second-fewest in a Test innings at home.

The fewest runs scored is 24, also at Sabina Park, against England in 2004. 49 The eighth-wicket partnership between Veerasammy Permaul and Denesh Ramdin in the second innings, the highest in 24 years for West Indies against Australia in a home Test. 611 Balls faced (or 101.5 overs) by West Indies' batsmen in this Test, the third-fewest against Australia when they have been bowled out twice. The fewest balls faced is 457 (or 76.1 overs) in Port of Spain in 1999. Mitchell Starc had accounted for Kraigg Brathwaite and Rajendra Chandrika in the first over of the innings late on the third day, and he struck in the fifth over this morning. A full ball curled into Shane Dowrich after angling across him from over the wicket and brushed his front pad. Starc whipped around to appeal for lbw, not realising the ball had gone on to hit off stump. He had figures of 6-4-2-3.

Prior retirement from International Cricket

Prior retirement from International Cricket

England and Sussex wicketkeeper Matt Prior has announced his retirement due to the Achilles injury which required surgery last year.

Following the second Test against India, at Lord's, Prior had an operation which ruled him out of the remainder of the 2014 season but retained hopes of resuming his career. However, he recently told ESPNcricinfo that his recovery was like "two steps forward and four steps back" and has been forced to concede he will not return.

"Today is a very sad day for me as I am forced to announce my retirement from the game I love," he said. "I had been hoping and expecting to be fit for the start of the 2015 season. Unfortunately, this has proved impossible, and I have now had to reach this decision.

India train for Fatullah Test in Mirpur heat

India train for Fatullah Test in Mirpur heat

The only noise to come on the hot Monday afternoon from Milk Vita Road in Mirpur section 6 was of the screaming and whistle-blowing policemen trying to keep vehicles from getting in the way of the India team bus that chugged in slowly towards the Shere Bangla National Stadium's entrance.

A touring team's first training session in Bangladesh has been generally to get acclimatised to the heat and humidity, and the pitches. India had originally scheduled only one day of training ahead of the Fatullah Test but a few days before their arrival for their 18-day tour, they added the afternoon session on Monday, a few hours after their plane landed at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. They had requested the BCB for it to be held in Fatullah, the venue for the Test, but Bangladesh's training schedule was already set for the afternoon in Fatullah.

Dravid is new Coach of Indian U19 Team

Dravid is new Coach of Indian U19 Team

Former India captain Rahul Dravid has agreed in principle to become the coach of the India Under-19 and A teams, BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur confirmed during a board advisory meeting on Saturday.

"The good news is that Rahul Dravid has agreed to coach India A and India Under-19 in the future," Thakur said. Dravid's first assignment will be a tri-series hosted by India, between the A teams of India, South Africa and Australia in July. He will also accompany the Under-19 team to next year's World Cup in Bangladesh.

Dravid had been widely tipped for the post since Tuesday, when ESPNcricinfo reported that the BCCI had a "role in mind" for him, with Thakur himself mentioning that "for any cricketer of that stature, the BCCI would like to have their services." Dravid was even approached to join the cricket advisory committee with former batsmen Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, but he declined the offer as he was keener on a more hands-on role.

Dowrich and Samuels steady West Indies

Dowrich and Samuels steady West Indies

Shane Dowrich and Marlon Samuels provided a steadying partnership for West Indies after Darren Bravo fell early on the third day against Australia in Dominica. But plenty of hard work still remained for West Indies, who were 97 for 3 at lunch and still trailed by 73 runs, with Dowrich on 31 and Samuels on 26.

West Indies added 72 runs in the session for the loss of Bravo, who on 5 drove Josh Hazlewood uppishly and was well caught by David Warner, hurling himself to his right at mid-off. It left West Indies at 37 for 3, but by the lunch break the partnership between Dowrich and Samuels had reached 60 runs, with both men moving slowly as survival was their major goal. There were a couple of nervy moments, though, including in the last over before lunch, when Samuels was on 26 and left a ball outside off to Shane Watson. Brad Haddin, standing up to the stumps, whipped the bails off a fraction of a second before Samuels lifted his back foot off the ground, a case of perfect timing for the batsman.

England Pprehistoric at World Cup - Collingwood

England Pprehistoric at World Cup - Collingwood

"It was obviously pretty prehistoric in terms of the way they went about things. You could see that in the results they got." Paul Collingwood's verdict on England's performance in the World Cup might just be the most apt epitaph yet.

Collingwood, who was coaching Scotland during the World Cup, remains the only Englishman to lift a global limited overs trophy: the 2010 World T20 in the Caribbean.

England

"We've always played catch-up in the one-day form of the game," he said, though he believes England have been handicapped by conditions that render attacking the new ball far harder than in other parts of the world. "Whenever we tried it in English conditions, it never quite worked because of the seam movement and all this business. We kind of get halfway and then always resort back to the more conservative plan. But now there is a real sense of 'we've got to do this' because we're getting nowhere playing conservative cricket.

AB De Villiers named SA's Cricketer of the Year

AB de Villiers was named South Africa's Cricketer of the Year for the second successive year at Cricket South Africa's annual awards on Wednesday. He was also awarded the ODI Cricketer of the Year, Player's Player of the Year and Fans' Player of the Year.

De Villiers has scored 1610 runs in 28 ODIs at an average of 80.50 since the start of 2014, including four centuries, and has had a sensational 2015. He set the record for the quickest century in ODIs (100 off 31 balls against West Indies in Johannesburg), followed by the fastest 150 in ODIs - off 64 balls - decimating the same opposition during a World Cup game in Sydney. He has also scored 779 runs in nine Tests at an average of 55.64 in the same time period.

Saeed Ajaml Dropped From Srilanka Tour!

Offspinner Saeed Ajmal, who was part of the squad in the two-Test series against Bangladesh, was left out because of his lack of impact with the remodelled bowling action. Ajmal picked up a solitary wicket in the tour game before the start of Bangladesh Tests, but couldn't make it to the Test XI with Zulfiqar Babar and Yasir Shah pipping him for spinners' spots. He played two ODIs and one T20 on the tour, but managed just one more wicket.

Babar Azam, Bilawal Bhatti, Sami Aslam were also excluded, while Rahat Ali, Sohaib Maqsood and Sohail Khan continued to be unavailable due to their respective injuries. Shehzad was dropped from both Test and ODI squads after the 2015 World Cup on disciplinary grounds. He was recalled for the Zimbabwe ODIs but remained on the bench throughout the three-match series. Shehzad is one of three openers - Mohammad Hafeez and Masood, being the other two - in the squad.

McCullum Proud as NZ stay true to their style

McCullum Proud as NZ stay true to their style

New Zealand wrapped up a 199-run victory shortly before the final hour was due to being when Jos Buttler padded up to Mark Craig. The spinners played a key part in the victory push as Craig and Kane Williamson shared six wickets between them on a pitch offering some assistance.

The visitors were ahead in the first Test for three days at Lord's before England produced a notable turnaround, but they did not let their heads drop and came out all guns blazing on the opening day at Headingley as they cantered along at more than four-and-a-half an over, something they repeated in their second innings .

"I'm really proud of this win, sometimes it's not easy when you lose the first Test match when you think you've played all right, to have that resolve to bounce back and stay true to your game," McCullum said. "That's what we did and we were able to beat what we think is a very, very good England team in their own conditions."

PCB nominates Zaheer Abbas for ICC presidency!

PCB nominates Zaheer Abbas for ICC presidency

The PCB has nominated former Pakistan batsman Zaheer Abbas for the ICC presidency, a day after Najam Sethi, the head of the board executive committee, withdrew his candidature for the post. Abbas was principal advisor to Sethi when he was the PCB chairman.

pcb

The ICC had asked the PCB to nominate an ex-cricketer last year in September but Pakistan had came up with Sethi's name. Sethi was slated to take over from Mustafa Kamal as the ICC president for a period of 12 months from July 1. In April, he had offered himself as the interim president after Kamal resigned and was willing to fill in for two months before taking a full-fledged role from July.

Andre Fletcher fined for ammunition possession

Andre Fletcher fined for ammunition possession

West Indeis News

Andre Fletcher, the West Indies and Windward Islands wicketkeeper-batsman, has been fined EC $2000 (USD 740.75) for possession of ammunition after he appeared before a magistrate in Dominica. He had been arrested last week at the Douglas Charles airport in Dominica.

Windwards Islands manager, Lockhart Sebastian, told Dominica News Online that the levied fine was paid and that attempts were being made to have Fletcher leave Dominica to get some rest.

He said Fletcher was unaware of his possessions while entering the airport. "There was no intention of criminal activities," Sebastian said. "He did not realise he had the ammunition. It could happen to anybody."

Fletcher has played 15 ODIs and 22 Twenty20 internationals for West Indies; his most recent appearance being in a T20 game against South Africa in Durban in January this year. He has played 60 first-class matches and was a regular in the Windwards Islands side during the 2014-15 season.

Najam Sethi pulls out from race for ICC presidency!

Najam Sethi pulls out from race for ICC presidency

Najam Sethi has withdrawn his candidature for the ICC presidency, allowing Pakistan Cricket Board to nominate an ex-cricketer instead. He however continues to hold the PCB office as head of powerful executive committee. The PCB has acknowledged Sethi's decision.

Interestingly, the ICC had asked the PCB to nominate an ex-cricketer last year in September but Pakistan came up with Sethi's name.

Sethi, the former chairman of the PCB, was slated to take over from Mustafa Kamal as the ICC president for a period of 12 months from July 1. The ICC after its April board meeting said that they would consider the appointment of Najam Sethi as ICC president during its meeting in Barbados at the end of June. Sethi was also briefed about the role of the ICC president and explained the responsibilities six months ago.

najam sethi

With exactly a month to go for the appointment, Sethi made the surprising move. In April, he had offered himself as the interim president after Kamal resigned and was willing to fill in for two months before taking a full-fledged role from July.

"I am writing to thank you and the other members of the ICC for nominating me as ICC President for 2015-16. It is a great honour that I shall always cherish," Sethi wrote to the ICC. "However, since the ICC announcement that from next year the post of the ICC president will be open only to iconic Test cricketers nominated by member Boards, I have increasingly felt that it is only fitting that this rule should be implemented straightaway so that one of Pakistan's great iconic cricketers should be so honoured.
